Circular tour around Lake Ruppin – via Wustrau, Karwe and Alt Ruppin

Rheinsberger Tor railway station in Neuruppin is a convenient starting point for this circular tour.

As the route forms a complete circuit and
a connecting route can be used to reach it,
the tour can also be started from other suitable locations.

From the railway station, the route first leads to Neuruppin’s lakeside promenade.
Beautiful views across the water open up along Lake Ruppin,
before the route continues towards Fehrbelliner Straße and
then along Erich-Dieckhoff-Straße.

A very well-developed cycle path begins shortly afterwards.
Between open fields, peaceful places and
small groups of trees, Lake Ruppin remains
within sight along many sections.

This part of the route offers plenty of countryside and
is particularly suitable for cycling at a relaxed pace.

The route reaches Wustrau-Altfriesack
on the southern shore of Lake Ruppin.
This historic district of the municipality of Fehrbellin
is known, among other things, for Wustrau Palace,
the Brandenburg-Prussia Museum and
the historic bascule bridge in Altfriesack.

In Wustrau, the route passes directly alongside the marina and
then continues to Altfriesack on a path beside
the L 164 state road.
Two attractive bridges are crossed there.
The historic riveted iron bascule bridge
at the lock on the Ruppin Canal is particularly worth seeing.

After Altfriesack, the route initially continues near the L 164 and
then turns onto the K 6828 district road towards Karwe.

Karwe lies on the eastern shore of Lake Ruppin,
directly opposite Wustrau-Altfriesack.

The village has a long history and
was mentioned as early as the 14th century.
The former Karwe manor estate is closely associated with the von dem Knesebeck family and
with Theodor Fontane’s “Walks through the March of Brandenburg”.

Today, the exhibition
“Fontane meets Knesebeck” in the former horse stable
is one of the reminders of the estate’s history.

After the cemetery in Karwe, the route turns
right into Bahnhofstraße.
From there, it continues to Lichtenberg.
This peaceful street village is part of Neuruppin and
is known, among other things, for its fieldstone church, the Hermanshof estate and
the sculpture trail towards Karwe.

The circular tour then continues through Nietwerder.
This small district of Neuruppin has a
neo-Gothic village church dating from the 19th century.
Its special features include the starry sky painted in the apse and
a rare historic organ.

From Nietwerder, the route continues to Alt Ruppin at the northern end of Lake Ruppin. The historic centre lies between branches of the River Rhin and was first mentioned in official records in 1237. Its waterside location and historic layout give Alt Ruppin a distinctive character.

On the final section, the route follows the area near the B 167 federal road back to Neuruppin. The circular tour is completed at Rheinsberger Tor railway station.

The tour combines lakeside scenery, well-developed cycle paths, fields, villages and numerous historic places. It is particularly suitable for cyclists who wish to experience Lake Ruppin from different perspectives on a longer circular ride.
